Martha Hill (1678-1752) was born in Virginia, USA and married Henry Giffard (1675-1710), settling in England with him. Her father Edward Hill (1637-1700) owned Shirley Plantation in Virginia, where this portrait still resides. The painting is said to be haunted.
Mary Emma Sercombe (1859-1922) is directly descended from Martha and Henry Giffard.
