Weare Giffard, Devon
Sir Walter Giffard was son of Gervaise Giffard (b.1122). Walter is recorded as active during the reign of Henry III (who reigned 1216-1272). He held the manor of Weare in the Torridge district of Devon and the manor subsequently took his name as its suffix. The ancient Giffard residence Weare Giffard Hall stands adjacent to Holy Trinity Church wherein this effigy of Sir Walter and of his wife Lady Alice de St George can be seen.
Walter was brother of Sir Roger Giffard, who married Anne Brewer (1158-1192), from whom Mary Emma Sercombe (1859-1922) is directly descended.
