CLOVELLY MANOR HOUSE

Clovelly in Devon is recorded in Domesday as held in chief from William the Conqueror by the Saxon nobleman Britric, and was later held by the King’s wife Matilda, after whose death in 1083 it was granted to her son King William Rufus (d. 1100).
By 1242 the manor of Clovelly had been acquired by Roger Giffard, and by 1303 it had passed to the two daughters of Roger's son Matthew: Isabell who married Sir John Stanton; and Eva who married Robert Mandeville.
