Giffard Memorial,
St Hieritha's Church, Chittlehampton
John Giffard (1523-1585) inheritied the estate of Brighteigh in Devon from his father Sir Roger Giffard (1494-1547). He married Mary Grenville (d.1608) who was sister of Sir Roger Grenville (1516-1545), captain of the Mary Rose when it sank in Portsmouth Harbour on 15 July 1545, and aunt to Sir Richard Grenville (1542-1591), captain of the Revenge at the Battle of Flores when he was mortally wounded in 1591.
This portrait medalion is part of a memorial erected in 1625 by Colonel John Giffard (1602-1665).
Mary Emma Sercombe (1859-1922) is directly descended from John Giffard and Mary Grenville.
