At the foot of the large Giffard monument in the church of St Hieritha is the pavement gravestone of Martha Hill/Giffard (1678-1752). Born in Virginia, USA, Martha married Henry Giffard (1675-1710) and settled with him at Brightleigh, Devon.
Mary Emma Sercombe (1859-1922) is directly descended from Martha and Henry.

The gravestone bears the following inscription:

Here Lyeth Martha widow of Henry Giffard Esq'r Daughter
Of Edward Hill Esqu'r Judge of the Admiralty and
Treasurer of Virginia Augst 31st 1752
