ST HIERITHA'S CHURCH
CHITTLEHAMPTON, DEVON
Caesar Giffard (1682-1715), son of John Giffard (1639-1712) and Frances Fane, was married to Mary Melhuish. He drowned in the River Torridge with his servant James Spurnay on 4th May 1715.
Mary Emma Sercombe (1859-1922) is directly descended from Caesar's parents.
The gravestone bears the following inscription:
here lyeth ye body of caesar
giffard Esqr ye 4th son of
John Giffard Esqr of Brightley
who was buried ye 6th day
of MAY Anno Dom 1715
